 Home Safety Tips

Learn how to protect your property and your loved ones with these home safety tips.

  • Remember to lock all doors and windows when you leave the home.
  • Keep all valuable items out of sight.

  • Install proper lighting around your home to keep it well lit at night.

  • Introduce yourself to your neighbors and get to know them. Also, take the initiative to start a Neighborhood Watch group.

  • Do not hide spare keys in obvious places such as: under doormats, in the mailbox, a planter, lamp, etc.

  • Install a peephole in your front door to make it possible to see who is there without having to open it.

  • Do not give out your alarm code to just anyone. Only a family member or trusted friend should know the code in case of an emergency.

  • Keep your home safe while you travel

  • Make your home look occupied by leaving blinds and curtains in everyday positions

  • Close and lock all doors and windows

  • Unplug appliances and leave a radio on

  • Install and use deadbolt locks on all exterior entrance doors

  • Put inside and outside lights on a timer so that they go on after dark

  • Pack your car inside the garage so that passersby won’t know you’re leaving

  • Turn down the volume on your telephone and answering machine, and make sure the message says that you’re unavailable rather than not at home

  • Let your local police department know that you’ll be out of town so that they put your home on the extra patrol list

  • Another important tip to remember when you travel is to arrange to have a friend or neighbor pick up newspapers, mail, or other deliveries while you’re away.

  • TURN YOUR SECURITY SYSTEM ON BEFORE LEAVING YOUR HOME. IT’S YOUR BEST DEFENSE AGAINST BURGLARY OR BREAK IN WHILE YOU’RE AWAY!
